Dual Secure Elements for Key Storage

Unlike most hardware wallets that rely solely on the main processor for secure data storage, Arcanum utilizes two secure elements from different manufacturers for added protection.

Arcanum integrates Microchip's ATECC608 and Maxim's DS28C36B to securely store your 24-word BIP39 seed phrase.

For an attack to succeed, all three elements — both secure chips and the main processor — would need to be compromised.

Authenticity Verification System

To protect against physical tampering (such as “Evil Maid” attacks), Arcanum firmware is digitally signed with a factory key. On startup, both the firmware and nearly every byte of flash memory are verified, triggering either a green or red status light.

This status indicator is controlled by dedicated circuitry linked to a secure element, making it impossible to manipulate via software. Any attempt to physically alter this circuit would be easily noticeable.

Anti-Phishing Security Words

Arcanum’s PIN system is split into two parts, such as 1234-5678. After entering the first half, two unique security words appear on-screen, tied to your specific PIN prefix and Arcanum device. (These words are securely generated and never exposed externally.)

By memorizing and verifying these words each time, users can detect fraudulent devices attempting to impersonate their Arcanum.

Physical Security Enhancements

The custom-designed PCB significantly increases resistance to hardware probing. Arcanum’s transparent casing is also part of its security model, allowing users to easily inspect for unauthorized modifications.

Due to the advanced use of secure elements, Arcanum does not have a factory reset feature. If the PIN is lost, the device cannot be recovered.

For additional security, a label marked "SHOOT THESE" indicates the best points for physical destruction if necessary.

Air-Gapped Functionality

Arcanum operates completely independently of computers. All actions can be performed using USB power banks or AC adapters, ensuring full air-gap protection. Supported functions include:

• PIN setup and configuration.

• Secure generation or import of 24-word seed phrases.

• Signing transactions using PSBT (BIP174) files.

• Multi-signature wallet configuration.

Dice Roll-Based Seed Generation

For users who prefer a fully manual seed creation process, Arcanum supports dice roll-based entropy. Roll a die 99 times and enter the results to generate a secure, BIP39-compliant seed phrase based entirely on user input.

Advanced PIN Security Features

Arcanum includes several extra security enhancements to safeguard your assets!

Duress PIN

Set up an optional "Duress PIN." When entered instead of your main PIN, the device will function normally but will open a decoy wallet instead of the primary one.

For maximum effectiveness, you can store a small amount of Bitcoin in the duress wallet to make it appear legitimate.

The duress wallet is derived from the same BIP39 seed phrase, so no additional backup is required. However, access to the primary wallet is not possible from the duress wallet.

Self-Destruct Countdown PIN

This is a stealth variation of the "Brick Me" PIN, introducing a countdown timer (configurable to minutes, hours, or days) before login.

Once activated, instead of a normal delay, this function secretly "bricks" the device or wipes the seed after the countdown, adding an extra layer of plausible deniability.

This feature simulates an access delay (similar to a bank vault) while ensuring that unauthorized access results in device destruction.

BIP39 Passphrases (25th Word)

This feature enables the creation of multiple hidden wallets, ideal for organizing funds or adding an extra security layer. Unlike the Duress PIN, BIP39 passphrases allow for an unlimited number of wallets to be generated.

Brick Me PIN

This optional feature allows you to set a "Brick Me" PIN, which, when entered, permanently disables the secure elements, rendering Arcanum unusable. This can serve as an extreme security measure in high-risk situations.

Login Delay

Add an optional time delay to your Arcanum login. When enabled, entering the correct PIN will trigger a countdown (set to minutes, hours, or days). After the timer expires, you will need to re-enter your PIN to gain access.
